California has been since its conception an imaginative process. The region’s name is an appropriation from a Spanish chivalric romance literature piece from the 16th century and even though it had been drawn by conquistadors as a peninsula during the first expeditions, by the 1600’s it was remapped and perpetuated as an Island for more than a century. Imagined by the colonial and expansionist powers as an empty land up for grabs, in reality it was the second richest linguistic area on Earth. Today it has been once again remapped as a divided territory but we can always reimagine California.
